Text: CDN reporton Climate and Development: Mauritius will need US$ 340 million per year to implement this climate transition action. Report presented by the World Bank team to the Minister of Environment and to Government, 19th February 2026 at the Docks, Port-Louis (Le Defi Quotidien, 20.2.2026, p.4)
Comments of DWM:We highlight again theessential need for new, broad political action aimed to combat climate change and save life on this planet! Major agreements on climate change have been reached at the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change Cop Meetings. Life on this tiny Planet Earth needs protection. But implementation of essential actions needed are proving very difficult for all democracies, for all governments.
All governments and citizens must be fully aware of the fact that we are now 8.3 billion humans on Planet Earth, that we have only one Earth and live on Spaceship Earth, a tiny planet out of trillions of others, but which somehow sustains life, including conscious life. And that we all are striving for a better quality of life. AND act accordingly, and for one thing implement fully the COP agreements.
Because of the work of our top scientists, we now know some of the key concepts and actions needed for ensuring our survival, which must of course be integrated into ALL educational systems and ALL government actions. China, Japan, the UK and the EU, Brazil, Venezuela, India, Indonesia, Russia, South Africa, Egypt, Nigeria, Ukraine, and the USA (to cite but a few) are some key great nations essential to the work to save the planet. Mauritius and the other small island states (SIDS) have their role to plan in this main global objective. It’s proved easy for governments for implement usual actions such as voting an annual budget, amending laws etc, but very difficult to embark on such broad, long-term actions.
The actionsneeded prove very difficult to do.Especially that such actions, which (when implemented)will affect most if not all aspect of life in the country: energy, food, transport, housing, lifestyle, environment, and nature protection etc. But they are also a new occasion to redesign structures and daily life actions and vastly improve the quality of life while saving Mauritius and contributing to saving the Planet. An example as proposed by Michael Atchia is that of redesign urbanisation so that people do live, recreate, work, shop, obtain medical help, train and so on in the same location, going about on foot or bicycle. Namely a fossil-fuel free environment (out cars and also car accidents). And for needed longer movement either using public transport (electric tramway extended to cover the whole island) or electric vehicles.
Mauritius can and should tackle climate change and fully implement ALL the recommendations of the PARIS COP 2015 and subsequent meetings. We can, as a leading small island state, become an example to the world of what can be done, what must be done, to save life on Planet Earth.
