Open letter to the Minister of Agriculture

Hon: A Boolell

Sir,

This is to inform you that I, Hannas Joomun, am currently working at the Mauritius Meat Authority. Recently I met with a serious accident in the exercise of my function as a slaughter man. I have my right arm broken in three places due to damaged equipment which cannot fix the ox properly in its place before the slaughter. The ox banged me with its head fiercely and threw me on the floor. I had to spend a considerable sum of money to undergo an operation in a private clinic.

It is to note that some equipment is out of use while others are in a very bad condition. Due to such poorly maintained equipment many incidents have taken place at the facility. The death of a worker in the past has sparked much concern because working in such a hazardous condition put us at high risk. Many complaints were submitted concerning these issues to the previous government but no actions were taken to ameliorate the situation.

Therefore we are making a plea to the actual government to see into the matter and we will highly appreciate if immediate actions could be taken to replace the defect equipment by new ones in order to ensure the safety of all the employees at the Meat Authority.

Please accept my heartfelt thanks Sir.

Hannas Joomun
