Open letter to the Prime Minister & Minister of education, tertiary education, science and technology

The Muslim Citizen Council (MCC) has learnt through the media that a certain private school, in the upper Plaine Wilhems, has introduced the so-called EVARS (Éducation à la Vie Affective, Relationnelle et Sexuelle) program to its students. The MCC categorically rejects the program and denounces the manner in which it is being advanced without proper national consensus.

This initiative, which includes the Gender Theory, same-sex marriage, new family models, LGBTQI, reflects a troubling drift toward the imposition of externally driven agendas that fail to respect the cultural, moral, and religious realities of Mauritius. It is unacceptable that such a sensitive and deeply personal domain, touching on the upbringing of our children, is being shaped without transparent consultation and without the clear consent of parents.

The MCC questions the basis upon which such initiatives are being implemented and whether due consideration has been given to the cultural, moral, and religious fabric of Mauritian society. Schools are not experimental grounds for ideologically driven content that may conflict with the deeply held values of families.

Let it be stated unequivocally: parents are not secondary stakeholders. They are the primary educators and moral guardians of their children. Any attempt to sideline them or dilute their authority through institutional programs will be firmly resisted.

While we fully recognize the importance of guiding our youth towards moral integrity, responsible behaviour, and respect for others, we strongly believe that such sensitive matters, particularly those relating to intimacy and sexuality, must remain primarily within the domain of parents and families, in accordance with their cultural, moral, and religious values.

The imposition of a standardized program addressing deeply personal and value-laden issues risks undermining parental authority and disregarding the social and cultural fabric of our nation. Mauritius is a society built on strong family foundations, mutual respect, and deeply rooted traditions. Any educational initiative that may conflict with these principles must be approached with utmost caution. The program teaches our children that two men can now be loving each other and get married, reducing the biological mother to a simple weekend visitor: the notion of family is finally shattered.

The MCC also raises serious concerns about the appropriateness and long-term impact of introducing complex and controversial subjects at an early age under the guise of “modern education.” Education must be anchored in the values that have sustained our society, not in imported frameworks that risk eroding them.

We therefore call on policymakers to immediately halt any rollout of such programs until:

            •           Full and public disclosure of all teaching materials is made available

            •           Engage in meaningful consultation with parents, educators, and community leaders,

            •           Clear guarantees are established to respect parental choice and cultural values

Our position is not one of rejection of education, but of protection of our children’s innocence, our societal values, and the essential role of parents in shaping the moral compass of the next generation.

The MCC remains committed to supporting an education system that promotes dignity, respect, and responsibility, without compromising the core values that define our nation.

The Secretariat,

Muslim Citizen Council
