In the United States of America it is not good to speak or act in favour of justice for Palestinians. Israel has succeeded to equate all those who are against Zionism as being persons who are against Jews. Not even against the apartheid State of Israel but against Jews. And when the campaign against an organisation or an individual has won the day it is logical that it is the organisation or the person who is fighting against the injustices perpetrated by Israel which or who will be branded as racist. The greatest example is unfolding before our eyes… yes the campaign to get rid of Jeremy Corbyn leader of the labour party of the United Kingdom who will face in the coming weeks a challenge to his leadership not because of his BREXIT stance but because he is systematically supporting the Palestinians and criticising Israel for its politicies quoad the Palestinians.
Israel has last week won another key battle when the House of Representatives has voted a resolution condemning the global Boycott Divestment and Sanctions Movement (BDS) because the proponents of the resolution say the (BDS) movement is harmful because it seeks to delegitimise Israel and is incompatible with support for a two-state solution.
What is the BDS?
The Boycott Divestment Sanctions (BDS) movement works to end international support for Israel’s oppression of Palestinians and pressure Israel to comply with international law.
The inspirations for the BDS movement stemmed from:
- Anti apartheid campaign in South Africa in the 1980s.
- The African American Civil Rights movement of the 1950s and 60s.
Don’t be fooled by any person about the depth of the propaganda of Israel against the Palestinians. The HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES voted across political lines (to be crystal clear DEMOCRATS and REPUBLICANS voted together) by 398-17 in favour of the motion.
For the DEMOCRATIC REPRESENTATIVE Jerold Nadler “BDS’s mission is to delegitimise Israel regardless of its policies and to undercut and deny the Jewish people the opportunity for self-determination”.
The Republicans wanted the resolution to go further by allowing state and local governments to punish BDS supporters by even cancelling business contracts. The house speaker Nancy Pelosi has resisted the onslaught of the Republicans by not allowing the SENATE BILL (which in effect would have allowed States to punish any member of the BDS movement) on the grounds that it will authorise the government to penalise free speech which is guaranteed by the FIRST AMENDMENT to the Constitution of the United States of America.
It is important, for those who Love JUSTICE & PEACE, to note that 27 States have adopted ANTI-BDS measures in the last years.
Two pro-Palestinian representatives from the Democratic Party Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib introduced another resolution affirming that all Americans have the right to participate in boycotts in pursuit of civil and human rights. The resolution won the sponsorship of the Veteran Civil Rights leader, John Lewis who had campaigned with the great Martin Luther king in the 1960s.
Is it a ray of hope? Yes but the campaign against all those who support the Palestinians must be looked from a larger perspective. Israel has the means to concoct all sorts of support in order to destroy those who support the Palestinians. The Israelis are looking for the opportunity to bring an “Anti BDS Resolution” in Europe or in some countries with the hope that it will have domino effect.
When will the OMAR & TLAIB resolution come to the House of Representative for debate? Nobody knows but what is sure is that the pro-Israelis will win by a big margin. Yes! by a big margin but will at the same time show to the world that there remain some progressives even in CONGRESS who will not cave in to the Israelis and will stand up to defend the right of oppressed communities. When will there be a resolution in any democratic country:
- Against the occupation by Israel;
- Against the check points;
- Against Human Rights
- Violations Israel is perpetrating on Palestinians
When will the world stop turning a blind eye to the atrocities of Israel? Do you know that this week police in Israel summoned a father to bring his FOUR YEAR SON for having, allegedly, hurled stones at an Israeli military vehicle in occupied East Jerusalem?
