[Obituary] Dr. Swabir Goodur passed on away to the heavenly abode

The 3rd February 2025 is a painful day and it is with great sorrow that we learned of the demise of our brother, Dr Swabir Goodur, an emblematic figure, in the promotion of teaching and learning of Urdu language for more than five decades. Today, the pain sinks deeper. He was a phenomenal human being, a humanitarian giant, with a precious gentle soul, and always down to earth. His wisdom, compassion, sharp intelligence, dignity, humility, humanism, and much more will be missed. He was hailed as a symbol of a multi-talented, legendary presenter in Urdu language at the MBC, poet, writer, playwright, stage actor and much more.

He started his career as Urdu Primary school teacher. With hard labour, firm determination and strong conviction, he became gradually, a poet, a writer, a playwright, a stage actor, and in all spheres of his domain expertise, he left his mark on the promotion of the language of Mirza Ghalib in Mauritius. The news of his sad demise created widespread gloom among the Mauritian community and particularly the thousands of Urdu lovers, whom he had instructed during his tenure of his post of a Senior Lecturer.

His passion and unwavering commitment to Urdu have contributed to its preservation and influence on the island. Former host of Naat’s show, Aqeedat Ke Phool, he captivated his audience with his eloquence and his remarkable mastery of the language. His oratory talent and scholarly skills made him an essential figure in the Mauritian cultural landscape.

In recognition of his commitment, Dr. Swabir Goodur was made Officer of the Order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean (OSK) in 2012. He was also very active in several organisations, including the Urdu Speaking Union, the National Urdu Institute, where he worked with passion to promote this language dear to his heart.

May Allah have mercy upon him and pour patience on his family and loved ones. May God have mercy on him, forgive him and dwell him in His spacious paradise.  O Lord of the worlds! Make his grave a garden of Paradise and for all the deceased Muslims.
